This exercise is designed for use by the Air Force to evaluate Cyber Operators. The evaluation is based on on criteria used by the USAF 55th Air Squadron.

The 55th Air Squadron has nine areas of evaluation for Cyber Operators. This exercise covers the Basic Host Operations (107) area of evaluation. It requires Operators to demonstrate:

  • A basic understanding of the Windows and Linux operating systems.
  • The ability to perform routine host and systems administration tasks.
  • The ability to troubleshoot and configure:
    • User accounts and user permissions
    • Change file permissions
    • Network connections
    • Move/copy files

In this exercise Operators will perform most tasks using the Linux Terminal (Shell) and the Windows PowerShell.

Prerequisites

Ability to use the Windows PowerShell and the Linux Terminal to perform basic systems administration including managing user accounts and groups, file permissions, system services, and network connections.

Expected Duration

2 hours, self-paced. Pause and continue at any time.
2 CPEs awarded on successful completion.

The 55th Air Squadron has nine areas of evaluation for Cyber Operators. This exercise covers the Environment Enumeration (205) and Baselining (206) areas of evaluation. It requires Operators to demonstrate:

  • Using approved tools to enumerate and identify endpoints within the assigned area.
  • Recording data in the expected format to enable building and refining network maps or other means of keeping situational awareness, to inform follow-on actions.
  • Gathering data about the environment.
  • Categorizing or catloging the collected information.
  • Documenting or updating the mission partner network's mission relevant terrain cyber architectures and topologies showing data flows to, within, and from mission terrain to include critical network paths, support systems, facilities, and physical connections.

The 55th Air Squadron has nine areas of evaluation for Cyber Operators. This exercise covers the Basic Cyber Security (109) area of evaluation. It requires Operators to demonstrate defense-in-depth techniques used to enhance security, including:

  • Firewalls
  • Intrusion Detection and Prevention
  • Identity Management and Authentication
  • Other cybersecurity concepts applicable to the mission environment

The 55th Air Squadron has nine areas of evaluation for Cyber Operators. This exercise covers the Baseline Security Assessment (207) area of evaluation. It requires Operators to demonstrate security assessment baselining by doing the following:

  • Perform authorized active vulnerability and compliance scanning.
  • Perform passive assessments of available data to determine associated risk and the security posture of the assigned system.
